Dawn Cooper has created another summer spotting guide, this time it’s butterflies instead of birds for Pets at Home’s My VIP Magazine.
Aiming to capture the individual complexity of the different species, Dawn was grateful to have an expert on hand to give her a few pointers on the differences between butterflies, having them appear in a range of different positions to create a sense of movement on the page, as if they were actually flying between the food plants that Dawn created to frame the spread.
The publication is only appearing digitally this month, but Dawn’s illustration’s still retain the subtle tonal differences of appearing on paper, with transparent captions added by the designer Jenny McNally allowing the focus to remain with Dawn’s beautiful drawings.
Since this project, Dawn has been using her new found knowledge to try and spot some of her own local butterflies;
“I have been trying very hard to identify butterflies in my local nature reserve, but they move so quickly, it’s hard to get a proper look! So far I have seen two peacocks, a red admiral and lots of marbled whites. I’m still looking for the others!”
