Andrew Davidson was commissioned by Alice Lediard of The Royal Mint, to illustrate The Flying Scotsman as post of the commemorative £2 centenary presentation pack. Andrew’s illustration show’s the oldest working locomotive still operating in the U.K. waiting at York station, chosen not just for it’s Victorian splendour (a worthy subject in its own right) but for its wonderful curved platforms.
York is also the home of the National Railway Museum, who were invaluable in supplying Andrew with excellent reference on running gear and chimney shapes.
The biggest challenge, apart from drawing in perspective the curved tracks and roof structures, was to combine accuracy, always a requirement when illustrating any form of historical transport, without destroying the spirit and drama of this world famous Locomotive.

Painted in Designer’s Gouache, the illustration took Andrew about 5 days to complete. The result is a magnificent celebration of The Flying Scotsman rendered in Andrew’s inimitable style.
