Quite the buzz: Claire Harrup Illustrates The Wild Bee Handbook for Hardie Grant and Quadrille

We caught up with our very own Claire Harrup to discuss her recent project with Hardie Grant and Quadrille. Claire masterfully created the illustrations on the cover and throughout ‘The Wild Bee Handbook’ by Sarah Wyndham Lewis, prioritising texture and scientific detail in a friendly and accessible way.

What was the process for creating the images?
When creating the images I always work by hand first – drawing and printing all of the elements and textures, building the image up in layers using a light box. I then put everything together in photoshop and colour the individual layers.
What was the biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge on this project was definitely accuracy! It was important, especially for the bees and wild flower specimens that the illustrations were as detailed and accurate as possible. Luckily I had wonderful art direction from the team at Quadrille and expert knowledge from the author Sarah to help me along.
What was your favourite part of the process/favourite image you made?
To my surprise I really enjoyed working on the more detailed illustrations, I’m used to working in a looser way so slowing down and concentrating on small details felt like a different way of working for me. I also had to buy some smaller brushes!
Did you learn any interesting facts about bees in the making of it?
It’s been wonderful to be able to identify some of the bees from the book in our own small garden – I had no idea there was such a variety of bees visiting us! It’s a very special thing to be able to slow down and take time to look and learn, this book allowed me that opportunity. I am extremely grateful to have spent time learning about such a precious and important species, that we should all try to do as much a we can to help protect.
