The Jewel Like Tones of Katie Ponders Saints, Angels & Demons

Posted in: Uncategorised

Katie’s eye for strong graphic compositions and the rich hues she brings to her illustrations created the perfect balance for these iconic images, many feeling reminiscent of stunning stained glass windows with the light reflecting from different angles. We talk to Katie about how she produced the artwork and what inspired her most.

I worked on this stunning book whilst I was travelling in India! I was sitting in brightly coloured cafes by the Ganges whilst I finished up the final details on the artworks. I think being in such a colourful and spiritual place really influenced the direction of some of these works. In India there are large multi-coloured images of Gods and Deities every where you look, and it felt wonderful to be in this environment as I worked on illustrations of Saints and Angels.

I loved learning more about the Saints and Angels, so many names of angels and saints are well known but the stories and their importance was not so well known to me. I did however find it a little disconcerting learning more about demons!

I developed all the work on photoshop, layering textures from mixed media to give the artwork more depth. I really enjoyed embracing lots of rich jewel like colours for this book and also had in mind the beautiful traditional manuscript art seen in illuminated texts and bibles. I find Catholic Churches extremely beautiful and loved having the opportunity to interpret the grandness and symbols into my own work.
