Heather Gatley graduated with a First in Illustration from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth in Summer 2006. She joined The Artworks through the Startworks programme. Heather is a skilled draftsman and her observational drawings make for interesting reportage as well as images that are beautifully abstract. She focuses on mark-making and line quality, combining this with collage, and traditional and digital techniques. She approaches her subject matter with an individual outlook and a visually rich style. She is interested in people, places, cultures and events, and often the mundane elements of her surroundings.
Previous work has been largely within editorial and decorative contexts, representing parts of society through reportage, which she documents with conceptual elements. Her ability to combine her accurate drawing with the charm of her style has made her popular with clients who need to convey information in an interesting but factually correct way, such as the many beautiful maps she regularly creates for Conde Nast Traveller. She has also worked on several book jackets, including the Paul Theroux series for Penguin.
She currently lives in Berlin and a selection of her clients include…
Waitrose, The Times, Penguin Books, The Guardian, Financial Times, Conde Nast Traveller, Virgin Books, Harvard Law Review, British Beer & Pub Association, Help the Hospices, The Illustrated Ape, LVMH Eyes, Microsoft Magazine, HarperCollins, Graze.com, The London Business Forum, Eurostar Magazine
