Sarah McMenemy Shadwell station illustrations

Posted in: Design, Special projects

On a recent trip on the East London line of London overground service we spotted these lovely illustrations by our Sarah McMenemy. Sarah was commissioned by London Underground to produce a series of illustrations as part of the regeneration of the transport links. Sarah said it was important to convey the cultural, architectural and social diversity of the area. Local landmarks as diverse as pubs, market stalls at Watney Street market and lock-up garages under the arches of the DLR line to a majestic Hawksmoor church and elegant tall ships in dock were printed onto two metre high enamel panels that now line the platforms at the station. The local school, parks, The Thames, sailing club, rolling bascule bridge all add to the interesting mix of features that this historic area of the London Docks has to offer. Now due to Crossrail and the flow of visitors to the Olympic village this permanent installation is getting greater exposure than ever.
