Lucy Davey’s new montage illustrations for RAND Europe

I was asked by RAND Europe to create artwork for their Spotlight annual report. The client wanted montage style illustrations for the four teams featured in the report – Defence, Security and Justice; Science and Emerging Technologies; Education, Employment and Skills; Health and care –  as well as nine spot illustrations highlighting some of the research areas. 

I decided on distinct and limited colour palettes for each area which I also used for the spot illustrations in each section. 

It was a new approach for me to work in a montage style and I enjoyed the challenge of fitting the vignettes together without using hard lines to separate them. I wanted the scenes to flow into one another whilst maintaining balance as a full page illustration. 

 

It was also my first time drawing a quantum computer – I’d only learnt of their existence a few days before the brief for that one!
